Haryana
Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary Health
Mrs Navraj Sandhu, who presided over a meeting of State
Core Group on Measles catch up campaign at Panchkula
near here today said that after completion of phase 2-B
of this campaign, Haryana would be the first state in
the country to complete Measles catch-up campaign in all
its districts.
It was
informed in the meeting that on recommendations of
National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI),
Measles Catch-up Campaign Phase-1 was conducted in 2010
in five districts of Haryana namely Faridabad, Gurgaon,
Mewat, Palwal and Jhajjar, in which more than 13 lakh
children were vaccinated.
It was
also informed that in the year 2011, Measles Catch-up
Campaign Phase 2-A is going on in six districts of
Haryana namely Bhiwani, Narnaul, Panipat, Rewari,
Rohtak and Sonipat. In this campaign, 13.60 lakh
children have been vaccinated against the estimated
target of 13.33 lakh during Measles Catch up campaign in
the six districts of Haryana. In Bhiwani-291253,
Narnaul-162888, Panipat-270290, Rewari-161475,
Rohtak-185042 and Sonipat-289453 children have been
vaccinated. This campaign has been evaluated by
independent agencies like WHO, UNICEF and medical
college. The evaluated coverage is more than 92 per cent
as on November 30,2011in these districts. A list of
missed children, who were not covered in outreach and
school activity, has been made and to cover these
children, a special three days activity has been planned
by these districts.
It was
observed that measles is one of the major contributors
of under five mortality. According to an estimate,
50,000 to one lakh children die from Measles annually
in our country. In India as well as in Haryana evaluated
coverage of vaccination against Measles is 69 per cent
Measles vaccine efficacy is 85 per cent at nine
months. Around 41 per cent children remain susceptible
to measles due to children being left out or drop-out
and fail to develop immunity.
There are
high avoidable mortality, morbidity and complications
like recurrent Diarrhea, Pneumonia, Encephalitis and
malnutrition and blindness due to corneal damage, due
to Measles. In more than 90 per cent cases, Measles
were found in children upto 10 years of age. Therefore,
the target age group for measles vaccination campaign is
nine months to 10 years population.
Necessary
arrangements are being made well before the initiation
of the campaign. State workshop has been held on
November 23 and 24, 2011 and participated by Chief
Medical Officers, DIOs, Urban Nodal Officers. Districts
and block level workshops have already been held for
preparations and review of micro-plans. District Task
Force meetings have already been held under chairmanship
of District Commissioner to review the preparation in
most of the districts. Training of all the vaccinators
will be done to avoid any programme error.
